With just over a week to the final round of the open mic before the grand finale in October, my inbox is flooded with requests for the current league standings.

The Top 10 in the league will all perform at the Word N Sound Festival on October 6. However, only the Top 5 compete for the ultimate crown of 2012 Word N Sound Open Mic Champion.

LEAGUE STANDINGS: Round 6 | 7 Jul

The latest scores for the Word N Sound Open Mic Poetry League are finally in. Apologies they took so long but as our dear Queen Mandi would say ‘the stakes are too high’ and we can not afford any more mistakes (neh Mpho).

So we have; 1 new entry, 1 drop out and a wider gap between our No.1 and 2

The current league standings are as follows
10. Purple Jupiter 372.5 points (down 4 spots)
9. KB 404 (new entry)
8. Ahimza 417.75 (down 3 spots)
7. Andrew 420 (up 3 spots)
6. Bonga 439.5 (up 2 spots)

5. Masai 458 (up 2 spots)
4. Mpho 487.5
3. No Life 498.75
2. Conelius Jones 594.5
1. Mandi 600

Before last month there were only 2 points between current no 1 Mandi Poefficient and Mr Conelius Jones. After her title winning performance last month though, there are now 5.5 ponts between the two.

Our reigning Supreme King of the Mic 2011, Masai Dabula, has finally worked his way back into the Top 5. If he stays right there, he’ll secure himself an opportunity to defend that title at the festival on SATURDAY 6 OCTOBER, where the Top 5 at the end of September’s episode will compete for the title of Supreme King/Queen of the Mic 2012.

Now the only question is…who will claim the R1000 that is up for grabs for the best performance of the day this Saturday. Big up to Blackcouch Sofserv for the sponsorship, and if you know The Chairman, then you know that only the best impresses him. So good luck and bring fire.

DON’T FORGET: This Saturday is a bumper edition of the Open Mic so there will be 5 extra spot open to absolutely anyone who wants to step on stage. Doors open at 12pm, get there real early in you plan to get onto the open Mic.

The show will begin at 1pm and features the ever so beautiful Natalia Molebatsi (fresh from her trip to London as part of SA’s official arts delegation), the comic and 2011 Open Mic Finalist Bonga Ndziweni,  and the talented Emmah Rhema Mabye holding it down for Pretoria. R40 gets you in to Emonti Diner on Bree, this Saturday 4 August 2012.

LEAGUE STANDINGS: Round 5 | 2 Jun

With just three more rounds till the finals of the Word N Sound open mic poetry league, the competition is certainly heating up.

If you missed last month’s show, here is a quick reminder of your top 5 for this month:
5. Schrodinger’s Cat
4. Masai Dabula
3. Mandi Poefficient
2. Ellipsis…
1. Cornelius Jones

So good luck to the 5 of you, lets hope you can keep your spot and a little note to the newcomers, if you thought cracking it into the top 5 was a challenge, just imagine what it takes to stay there.

Now for the finale, which is fast approaching (this is when everyone takes out their diaries to jot down SATURDAY 6 OCTOBER 2012) all that matters are each poet’s points on the Word N Sound Poetry League.

And I must say, with 3 new entries on the league’s top 10, a new number one and number two with only 7 points between them…Saturday’s show is set to be real interesting.

The current standings on league are as follows;

  1. Mandi 509 points (up 1 spot)
  2. Cornelius Jones 507 points (up 1 spot)
  3. No Life 455 points (down 2 spots)
  4. Mpho 397.5 points
  5. Ahimza 374 points (new top 10 entry)
  6. Purple Jupiter 372.5 points
  7. Masai 366.5 points (up 2 spots)
  8. Bonga 365 points
  9. Diema Dika 341 points (new top 10 entry)
  10. Andrew 335 points (new top 10 entry)

As per Word N Sound tradition, the top 5 on the league at the end of September’s show will do battle at the finale while those who hold spots 6 – 10 will perform a piece on the night.

So…3 shows to go. Who will take this year’s crown of Word N Sound King/Queen of the mic?
