Siyabonga Ngcai | Eastern Cape

Siyabonga Ngcai better known as Gqoboz’imbawula/Mbawula is an Architectural Technology student at Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University. He is a praise singer poet, writer; vocalist and former pantsula dancer born and raised in Mthatha in 1989. His poetry and music, referred to Rhythm and Poetry or UmculoBuciko is more dominated by isiXhosa as medium spiced with African jazz beats, afro soul beats, sound effects of animals and nature.

He started writing poetry at the age of 15 but never got any platform to perform, until he was in high school in 2006. In 2008 and 2009 he attended drama and dance sessions in Mthatha community art centre. In 2010 he played a part in the Love life events in Mthatha and won an award for the best performing artist in the poetry category and later that year he dropped his single entitled Ilangaft Amanda produced by Lawi.

2011 he was invited to share his short stories on the SAPS woman’s day celebrations held in Mthatha Police Camp and also performed for children at BOSASA and Ekukhanyeni Children’s Home.

In December 2011 he released his first mix tape entitled UKHOLO LWEMVELI “ BatshiseMbawula Volume one “ which got an air play in few community radio stations of the Province of the Eastern Cape.

In 2011 he joined Culture Consciousness Society NMMU as performing artist; the society saw potential through his dedication and elevated him to the executive as P.R.O, but he is currently an acting chairperson of the society.
